Sanctuary: Hands

Several years ago I volunteered at a primate sanctuary and was immediately struck by the similarity of their hands to ours, not only in appearance, but by the way they used them: to self-soothe, to comfort one another, to fidget, and to work. The hand prints were especially amazing to me and I greatly enjoyed studying and photographing them. Many of these monkeys were rescued from research labs, and just as our own, their pasts were marked in their prints, and the histories of the lives they had lived were documented landscapes.
